Homemade Plant Based Milks / kitchen staples

If you don't enjoy, or can't have dairy milk, there are so many delicious alternatives out there - all of which are super easy + quick to make (literally 1 minute), are much cheaper + fresher than store bought, and are waste free (using old jars and bottles)! You can add a variety of ingredients to make different flavours, and make as much or as little as you like.

Once again, I got all of my ingredients from Sprout Market (even the nut milk bag!) which was super convenient as everything was delivered to my door in just a couple of days! Use this link here to receive free shipping and 20% off your first order when you sign up.

I have created 3 plant based recipes for you to try. The first is your ordinary almond milk, second is hemp seed milk, and lastly strawberry coconut milk (the best in my opinion).

A few things to note:

  • You will notice homemade almond milk does taste a little different from your store bought one, but that's simply because it's fresh.
  • Hemp seed milk isn't a common seed milk to make but it is becoming more popular (hemp seeds have only recently become legal to consume in Australia and New Zealand) due to its health benefits. It has quite a strong nutty flavour, so if you don't like how bland almond milk is, i'd recommend making hemp seed milk.
  • Hemp is known to be the most utilised, diverse and durable crop in the world. Because it is so durable, pesticides and herbicides are rarely used on the crops which is super beneficial for your body.
  • There are loads of health benefits of hemp seeds. To name a few - helps relieve arthritis and joint pain, it's a high fibre food which is great for your digestion and also feeds the probiotics in your gut, great for your hair, skin and nail health, full of healthy fats and essential fatty acids (which balances inflammation in the body and links to reducing cancer), great source of protein and contains a large variety of vitamins and minerals.
  • You can also create different flavoured milks using natural ingredients like dates, vanilla, salt, cocoa, turmeric, cinnamon, berries, etc. Instead of making plain coconut milk, I added in some fresh strawberries, dates and vanilla to make strawberry milk which turned out amazing.

ALMOND MILK:

YOU'LL NEED//

** If you only have a small high speed blender that won't hold 3 cups of water, half the almonds and water and blend them this way, mixing them in a larger jug at the end!

METHOD//

  1. Place your almonds in a medium bowl and cover with water. Set aside for 12-24 hours to soak. This process is called activating the almonds and is required for making almond milk. Note that your almonds will expand after they are soaked and will equate to more than 1 cup - this is normal and doesn't change anything.
  2. Once soaked, drain the water and place almond in a high speed blender with 3 cups of water. If you feel it is too thick, you can add in more water - it's totally up to you! (add flavours in now)
  3. Blend on high speed for 30 seconds.
  4. Place your nut milk bag in a large bowl and pour your almond milk inside.
  5. Using one hand, twist the top of the bag, and with the other squeeze the liquid out. continue twisting the bag and squeezing until you've gotten all the liquid out. You'll be left with course almonds - you can compost these or make something out of them (cookies even).
  6. The liquid you're left with is your almond milk! Pour this in a glass jar or bottle with an airtight lid and store in the fridge for up to 4 days!
